Bereavement Services for schools
Training for Primary school staff to feel confident and competent in how to incorporate bereavement, grief and loss into the new RSHE curriculum and in supporting bereaved pupils and their families
1 in 29 children aged 5 to 16 have been bereaved of a parent - the equivalent of one child per class*
A parent of a child under 18 dies every 20 minutes in the UK - 127 newly bereaved children every day*
80% of teachers report they have had no training on how to support with bereavement and grief

This training is designed to help school staff feel confident and competent to support bereaved pupils and deliver lessons about bereavement, loss and grief. It also covers developing a school bereavement policy as this provides a secure foundation. It is facilitated by specialist bereavement practitioners who have extensive experience in supporting bereaved children, their families and school staff.
The training will include:
Sensitive communication with family
Skills to engage in conversations about bereavement in a sensitive and age appropriate way.
Understanding the grieving process at different ages and stages and ways to support this
Using Bereavement support plans
Developing a Bereavement Policy as a proactive response to underpin a clear, compassionate whole school approach
Supporting SEND pupils
Understanding when to access bereavement support and where this can be found.
Incorporating Bereavement and loss in the RSHE curriculum from Sept 2026:

Using books to support loss
Developing emotional literacy
Strategies to help develop resilience

Training format:
3 hour training session delivered online, or in person, for small groups
